Sen. Barack Obama

Congrats to Sen. Barack Obama for clinching the democratic nomination for President of the United States. I believe that all within education should be proud to have a potential U.S. leader that is interested in fostering education in America.

Moving Forward

I reconnect with my work on Higher Education Today after completing the first quarter of my doctoral studies. I have been surprised at the amount of writing needed to complete this type of degree. My time here has suffered, but my drive to keep this portal relevant will overcome this obstacle. With many things in life, change will occur.

The completion of my master's degree was a whirlwind. It came and went before I could think twice, now I have this blog remaining. My life is also changing as I take new job and a new challenge with The Art Institute of Indianapolis. This exciting opportunity will be yet another obstacle in relation to time management. I look forward to this challenge, more postings to come.

Into the Future...

What an interesting time in my life and studies. I have been inspired by my activity within higher education to continue the evolution of this weblog. Since I have just began my doctoral program it may take some time to keep my activity levels up in relation to posting and writing. Stay tuned as Higher Education Today evolves.

Please post any and all comments relating to both the weblog in general and higher education.

Argosy University Denver - Educational Leadership ED.D

1-08-08

Tomorrow is the first day of class for my doctorate. I am excited to get started. My hope is to continue the evolution of this portal via my continued studies. A scholarship is something I must do. I could link it to Higher Education Today. If anyone has any ideas on how I may start up a scholarship project, please post your ideas in the comment section.

I have been thinking a lot about what type of topic I will choose for my dissertation... more posts to come time permitting. I anticipate this portal will go through various times of low and high activity, yet it must live on. I have various ideas on how this will occur and have posted them in the past.

Guide, Inform, Instruct:
1. Look through the archive for an example of dialogue in relation to increasing weblog activity.

December 2007 - Regis Graduation

I would like to use this post as an update on the state of Higher Education Today. I have spent the last few months completing my graduate capstone project for Regis University. The writing of this research document has taken all of my attention. It will be available at the Regis University library very soon. It is the project that created this portal, I sincerely hope this is just a beginning.

In January of 2008 I will begin my doctoral studies with Argosy University here in Denver. I am excited for the next phase of my education. I believe Regis University has prepared me for the challenges ahead. I look forward to meeting new faculty and students, and expanding my research related to higher education. I pledge to find a way to include this portal and extend the life of this project into the future.

Will this technology remain relevant, will students of the future find this portal useful and current? I look forward to all of this with anticipation and excitement!

Journal #7 - Teaching with the weblog...

Journal #7
A definite benefit of the weblog is it's ability to be used for instruction. As I have built this portal I have attempted to keep it simple. A place where data can be found and used in a multitude of ways. One way it can be used is for teaching. An instructor could direct students to a portal such as this in conjunction with a class. This would have a huge impact on the amount of information a specific weblog would contain. The traffic generated via assignments from a class related to a weblog would generate the type of communication optimal in this setting. Future students would also have the ability to search the archive links and see what students and scholars before them have contributed.

The Google Group function that Blogger uses seems to also be perfect for instruction. I have created such a group and posted a link toward the bottom of this weblog. The group tool works excellent in conjunction with the content posted on this portal. It provides a specific function expanding the ability of visitors to interact. The group portal allows any group member to post a discussion thread. The main page of this weblog only allows visitors to comment on a posting, not post their own ideas. This is a much needed expansion and functions like student portals used by Regis University in their graduate program. I do like this function, but also recognize the need of the weblog administrator to have ultimate control over content. If anyone could have a prominent posting this portal would take on more of a chat environment. The visitor can however comment where and when they see fit. If these comments are for any reason in need of editing or deletion, the weblog administrator does have the ability to do so. Again, this keeps the content relevant and correct.

Another benefit of the Google Group is that there is no cost to the student, instructor, or university in relation to IT services. Similar portals in place at universities are at the mercy of their specific IT department. Google has the resources needed to keep their technology and programs operational. Increased exposure to the various way's in which the group function can be used are exciting. I look forward to seeing similar extensions of Blogger evolve.

Guide, Inform, and Instruct:
1. Research how Google Group functions. Master this technology.
2. Research other weblog providers and how they compare to Blogger.

Journal #6 - Halloween Post - The Future of Higher Education Today

Journal #6
On this Halloween 2007 night I find myself thinking about the future. How will this weblog evolve? The plan for this portal is directly tied into the key component of my current capstone project. To create something that can continue to survive and function in the future. The diversity of this medium seems to support such an evolution. With my pending doctoral studies this weblog will remain useful to me personally for at least another two to three years. Much is left to learn, exciting additions are yet to come.

Idea...
Organize a scholarship connected to Higher Education Today and this portal.

Once I can amp up traffic connected to this site this could be a viable option. I think my first step would be to create an area of this weblog devoted to such an idea. Certainly another important element in relation to my capstone project. Best case scenario this phase has positive tangible bi-products I can include in the presentation of this project. The creation of a scholarship could be one example. But it must live on past the completion of the formal portion of my graduate work to reach it's full potential.

Overall, the key to the future of this weblog is there must be a future. Attention and support of its functions will be needed to ensure this happens. My continued work within higher education will also be key.
